Accredited Research Findings of Four Local Sugarcane Varieties Released

Research findings of four local sugar cane varieties by Senior Researcher Esayas Tena Gashaw (Ph.D) of the Research and Development Main Center of Sugar Corporation have been accredited and released for the first time in the history of sugar development sector of our country. The sugarcane varieties were endorsed and released by The National Variety Releasing Committee on May 31 2019.

The major benefits of the varieties among many others are the following:

  1. The varieties are  appropriate for different sugarcane growing ecosystems ;
  2. They have high yield of sugarcane as well as sucrose content ( 20-30% more yield than the existing varieties) ;
  3. The varieties could be harvested in 13-14 months in contrast to the existing varieties which are harvested in 18-22 months time and
  4. They have a feature of specific adaptability in resisting plant diseases and pests and other environmental threats like salinity, drought and water logged areas.

It is to be recalled that the four varieties were inaugurated on June 7, 2019 by Ato Weyo Roba, CEO Sugar Corporation and Ato Kaydaki Gezahegn, Member of The Board of Directors of Sugar Corporation and Advisor, with the rank of State Minister, to the Minister of Peace.
